Q&A › Preparation & choosing a spouse

🧭 Preparation & choosing a spouse · #142

I have never lived away from my parents. How do I prepare to be independent after marriage?

Start practising independence now, little by little, so the transition after the akad does not feel sudden. Take over tasks your parents have been handling, such as paying your own bills, buying groceries, or taking the car to the workshop. Learn to make small decisions without asking them straight away. After marriage, stay close to your parents, but discuss your household matters with your spouse first. Missing them is normal. Schedule regular visits or calls so that missing them does not turn into guilt. Your parents may also need help letting go of their child calmly, so share your plans with them early. See parents and in-laws.
