🕌 Worship in the home · #53
A husband and wife often oversleep and miss the Fajr prayer. What is the ruling, and what is the solution?
Someone who oversleeps unintentionally is not sinful, but must pray as soon as they wake; the sin lies in deliberately making no effort to wake or letting it become a habit.
The Prophet ﷺ said: whoever forgets a prayer should pray it when he remembers; there is no expiation for it other than that (Sahih al-Bukhari 597). Yet frequent oversleeping signals a need for change: sleep earlier and avoid screens late at night; set several alarms and place them away from the bed; perform wudu and remembrance before sleeping; and wake each other as a couple, as praised in the hadith about spouses who wake each other for night prayer. Couples working shifts can arrange for one to be responsible for waking the other. If tiredness stems from a health problem such as sleep apnoea, get treatment.
