Q&A › Khitbah & engagement

💍 Khitbah & engagement · #15

How long is a suitable engagement in Islam?

The Shariah sets no specific period; what is recommended is not to prolong it without need.
The length of an engagement depends on financial preparation, accommodation, studies and family matters. But a very long engagement often brings problems: the temptation to cross boundaries, changes of heart, interference by others, and rising costs. Many scholars advise that couples who are compatible and able should marry soon. If there are obstacles such as studies, one option is to conclude a lawfully registered contract first and postpone the walimah. In Malaysia, arrange the pre-marriage course, health screening and marriage application early, as they take time. See khitbah and walimah.
