🚪 Divorce, ʿiddah & rujuk · #97

Should we delay the divorce until our child finishes a major exam?

Delaying for a short period for the child's sake can be a wise choice, as long as the home stays calm and safe. News of a divorce during exam week can disrupt a child's focus. But a delay only means something if the two of you can stay courteous throughout that period. Agree on shared rules: no quarrelling in front of the child, home routines continue, and no one pulls the child to his or her side. Set a date after the exam to tell the child together, in simple language and without blaming anyone. If the tension has reached a level that frightens the child, delaying the separation is no longer a kindness to him. Read more on the how to explain divorce to children page.
