Q&A › Divorce, ʿiddah & rujuk

🚪 Divorce, ʿiddah & rujuk · #98

We are thinking of reconciling (rujuk) purely for the children's sake. Is that wise?

Children are a good reason to try again, but rujuk will only last if the original problems are also fixed. If you go back without changing anything, the children may witness a second, more painful separation. Before rujuk, sit down and discuss the cause of the divorce first, whether money, attitude, family interference or something else. Ask yourselves: are we both willing to change, or are we just afraid of loneliness and what people think? Set a few concrete promises and a way to monitor them, and consider a few counselling sessions before the words of rujuk are spoken. Allah says: “Divorce is twice. After that — either retain in a proper manner, or release with kindness (ihsan)” (Surah al-Baqarah 2:229). See also iddah and rujuk.
