🤍 Character & conduct between spouses · #60
I realise I nag my spouse a lot. How can I change this habit?
Recognise that nagging is usually a need that has not been expressed clearly; replace long repetition with one specific request at a suitable time.
Allah teaches speaking with wisdom and good counsel (an-Nahl 16:125), and the Prophet ﷺ advised: make things easy, do not make them difficult; bring good news, do not drive people away (Sahih al-Bukhari 6125). Repeated nagging makes the listener "switch off", so even what is right is not heard. Try this: raise the issue once, say what you hope for, agree on a time, then stop. For example, "Could you take the rubbish out every Monday and Thursday night?" works better than "you never help". The spouse being nagged should also ask what need lies behind it, rather than just avoiding it. See Emotional communication.
