🧭 Preparation & choosing a spouse · #62
May a sharifah (a woman descended from the Prophet) marry a man who is not a sayyid?
The marriage is valid if the woman and her guardian agree; in the Shafi'i school, kafa'ah (compatibility) in lineage is a right of the woman and her guardian that they may waive, not a condition of validity.
Allah affirms that the most honoured in His sight is the most God-conscious (al-Hujurat 49:13). The Prophet ﷺ told families to accept a suitor of good faith and character (Jamiʿ at-Tirmidhi 1084), and he married Zaynab bint Jahsh, a noble woman of Quraysh, to Zayd ibn Haritha, a former slave. Shafi'i scholars include lineage in kafaʾah so that a woman and her family are not demeaned, so if they consent, the marriage is valid. The real issue is usually family acceptance; discuss it respectfully, involve respected figures, and do not break family ties. See Kafa'ah (compatibility).
