A marriage certificate or taʿliq certificate has been lost or damaged. How can a copy be obtained?
Apply for a copy or extract of the marriage register at the religious office or the Registrar of Marriage, Divorce and Ruju' in the state where the marriage was registered; make a police report if the certificate is lost, as the office requires.
Allah tells us to record and keep important matters (al-Baqarah 2:282). Act 303 requires marriage registers to be kept (s.29) and allows them to be inspected and copies made (s.43); state enactments have matching provisions. Bring both spouses' identity cards, the date and place of the contract if known, and pay the set fee. The marriage certificate is important for registering children's births, maintenance claims, property, inheritance and travel. Keep a scanned copy somewhere safe and the physical copy in a different place. If the marriage took place abroad, follow the procedure for registering foreign marriages. See Marrying abroad.
