🤍 Character & conduct between spouses · #48
My spouse often comes home late without telling me. Is this just a small matter?
It is not a small matter; letting one's spouse know where one is and when one will be home is part of living together kindly and honouring the trust of the household.
Allah commands husbands to live with their wives in kindness (an-Nisa' 4:19), and the rights and duties of both are balanced according to what is reasonable (al-Baqarah 2:228). A spouse waiting without news may worry about safety, cook food that goes to waste, or be unable to plan for the children. A short message — "an hour late, the meeting has not finished" — is enough. This applies to wives too. If coming home late becomes a habit without good reason, calmly discuss the real cause — workload, avoiding home, or something else. In polygamy it also relates to keeping to the rota. See Emotional communication.
