Does the reward of charity given on behalf of a deceased husband or wife reach them?
Yes, scholars agree that the reward of charity given for the deceased reaches them, as do prayers and seeking forgiveness for them.
A man told the Prophet ﷺ that his mother had died suddenly and he believed she would have given charity had she been able to speak; he asked whether she would be rewarded if he gave charity for her, and the Prophet said yes (Sahih al-Bukhari 1388). The Quran also teaches the prayer of later generations for their brothers who preceded them in faith (al-Hashr 59:10). Good forms: ongoing charity such as a water endowment, a well, a mosque or copies of the Quran; paying the deceased's debts; carrying out their bequest; and keeping ties with their family and friends. Settle debts and the heirs' rights first before giving large sums from the estate. See Preparing for death.
