🕌 Worship in the home · #32
A wife wants to make up missed Ramadan fasts. Does she need her husband's permission?
Making up Ramadan fasts is an obligation, so it does not need the husband's permission when time is running short; while there is plenty of time, good manners are to let him know and choose suitable days.
The hadith forbidding a wife to fast without the permission of a husband who is at home refers to voluntary fasts (Sahih al-Bukhari 5195). ʿAisha r.a. related that she sometimes could only make up her Ramadan fasts in Shaʿban because she was busy attending to the Prophet ﷺ (Sahih al-Bukhari 1950) — showing that making up can be delayed within the year with regard to the husband's needs. But when Shaʿban is nearly over and fasts remain, she must fast even if her husband disagrees, since there is no obedience in abandoning an obligation. A husband should support her, not hinder her. See the question on voluntary fasts.
