Q&A › Raising children (tarbiyah)

🧒 Raising children (tarbiyah) · #78

Does a young child need a fixed daily routine, and how do I build one?

A fixed routine gives a young child a sense of security because they know what will happen next. Set roughly the same times for waking, eating, playing, napping, bathing and going to bed. A routine does not mean rigidity; it is a loose framework that can change with circumstances. Build the prayer times into the rhythm of the day so that the child grows up knowing them as part of life. Give a gentle warning before switching activities, for example ‘after this we'll tidy up the toys’, so that transitions are easier. An orderly day reduces tantrums and makes children calmer. See educating the family.
