Must maintenance be given in cash, or is it enough for the husband to pay the bills and buy the groceries directly?
Both are valid, as long as the wife's and the household's needs are truly met according to the husband's means; what matters is that the needs are met, not the form of payment.
Allah commands maintenance according to one's means (at-Talaq 65:7), and the Prophet ﷺ said a wife's right is to be fed and clothed (Sunan Abu Dawud 2142) — that is, her needs, not necessarily cash. Many husbands pay rent, utility bills and groceries directly; that counts as maintenance. Still, the wife's personal needs are better given as money so she does not have to ask every time. Problems arise when a husband controls every expense so that his wife has no money in hand at all, or when bills fall into arrears. A clear agreement — what he pays directly and how much cash each month — prevents misunderstanding and makes proof easier if there is a dispute in court. See Maintenance guide.
