After embracing Islam, must I change my name and drop my original family name?

Islam does not require you to change your name as long as its meaning is not bad, and keeping your original family lineage (nasab) is required. You can choose an Islamic name as an addition if you like, but dropping your birth father's name is not an obligation; keeping your lineage traced to your real father is something Islam preserves. Only a name that carries a meaning of shirk or something bad needs to be changed. Consider also the feelings of your original family, who may be hurt if you drop their name. For official documents and registration, consult the religious affairs office and the relevant registration department. See interfaith.
