Q&A › Polygyny: the law

🏛️ Polygyny: the law · #81

The polygyny hearing date falls during my postnatal confinement. Can I ask for another date?

You can apply; the court usually considers reasonable grounds such as health or having just given birth. Do not simply fail to attend, because absence without notice may lead to the hearing going ahead without your view. Contact the court registrar or your lawyer as soon as possible. Prepare evidence such as a doctor's letter or your baby's birth certificate, and ask how an application for postponement is made. You can also ask whether attending online is allowed in your situation. Use the extra time to rest and gather your thoughts. The decision on postponement still rests with the court. See if the wife does not attend.
