There are confinement practices I feel are harmful to my health. Can I refuse them?
You have the right to refuse confinement practices that harm your health, because looking after yourself is a requirement, not an option. Good and harmless customs can be observed out of respect for the family, but no inherited practice outweighs the safety of mother and baby. If you are unsure whether a particular practice is dangerous, ask a qualified doctor or midwife. Explain your refusal to the family respectfully and calmly, not in a defiant tone, and ask your husband to support you. Distinguish between well-founded health advice and beliefs without evidence. Your health and your baby's are the priority. See postnatal health.
