Q&A › Rights & responsibilities

🏡 Rights & responsibilities · #273

I am exhausted from caring for a parent with a long-term illness. Is it sinful to feel tired and stressed?

Feeling tired and stressed while caring for someone who is ill is not a sin, and admitting it does not lessen your devotion. Allah does not burden a soul “beyond what it can bear” (Surah al-Baqarah 2:286), so preserving your own strength is part of this trust. Do not carry it alone: ask your siblings to take turns, get help from a nurse or care service if you can afford it, and take time to rest without guilt. Share your feelings with someone you trust or a counsellor so they are not bottled up. Look after your sleep, meals and worship. A healthy carer can care better and for longer. See mental health.
