🤍 Character & conduct between spouses · #35
Now that I am married, do I still need to lower my gaze towards others?
Yes, the command to lower the gaze applies to all believers, married or not.
Allah commands believing men to lower their gaze and guard their private parts, because that is purer for them (an-Nur 24:30), and gives the same command to believing women (24:31). The Prophet ﷺ said that the eyes too commit zina, and their zina is the gaze (Sahih al-Bukhari 6243). Marriage is not a licence to look with desire; if anything it should be a protection. Today the challenge lies mostly on screens: social media, advertising and pornography. A gaze left unchecked leads to comparing one's spouse with others and to dissatisfaction. Practical steps: limit the accounts you follow, do not stay alone with your phone late at night, and if there is an addiction to pornography, get professional help. See Modesty & boundaries and Managing impulses.
