🤍 Character & conduct between spouses · #54
My wife is a full-time homemaker. How can I value her unpaid work?
Recognise that running the home and raising the children is a great trust acknowledged by the Shariah, not "just staying at home".
The Prophet ﷺ said that each of you is a guardian, and a woman is a guardian in her husband's house and will be asked about her charge (Sahih al-Bukhari 893). In the Shafi'i school, housework is not even legally obligatory for a wife; if she does it, it is a contribution and a kindness that deserves appreciation. Show appreciation in words, by helping as the Prophet ﷺ helped with household work (Sahih al-Bukhari 676), by giving her personal money she need not account for, and by giving her time to rest and chances to study or spend time with friends. Consider savings or retirement contributions for her too, since she has no EPF of her own. See Family finances.
