🏡 Rights & responsibilities · #276

Is it sinful to place our parents in an elderly care home because we cannot care for them fully?

What is required is that parents are well cared for and not neglected, and how that is done differs according to each family's circumstances. Caring for them yourself at home is best if you are able, because their children's presence means a great deal to them. But if their health requires specialised care that you cannot provide, finding a good care home can be a responsible choice, not abandonment. What matters is not to cut ties: visit them often, make sure they are well cared for, and keep up your love and prayers. If you are unsure about this decision in your situation, discuss it with the family and consult the religious affairs office. See maintenance of parents.
