🏡 Rights & responsibilities · #281

My elderly parents live far away from us. How can I still care for them and be dutiful?

Distance does not cancel dutifulness; it simply asks you to be more creative in showing it. Call them often, and make it regular so they have a time to look forward to. Take care of their needs from afar: send money for expenses, arrange help from neighbours or relatives nearby, and make sure their health care is looked after. Plan regular visits, and if possible, arrange for them not to be alone when they are ill. Pray for them every day; prayer crosses every distance. Consider whether they could live closer if circumstances allow. Do not let busyness become an excuse for neglect. See maintenance of parents.
