May I attend non-Muslim family dinners and gatherings that are not religious in nature?

Attending family gatherings that are not religious ceremonies in order to keep family ties is encouraged, while keeping within the limits of the Shariah. Attend gatherings such as feasts, birthdays or meals together, because keeping family ties is a religious requirement. Take care with a few things: make sure the food you take is halal, avoid places mixed with sinful activity, and pray on time. If unsure about the food, eat what you are sure is halal or eat before you go. Your well-mannered presence often changes your family's impression of Islam. If a gathering is mixed with religious ritual, consult a religious officer about the limits. See interfaith.
