Q&A › Rights & responsibilities

🏡 Rights & responsibilities · #288

When my wife and I disagree on a major decision, how should shura (consultation) work?

Shura means your wife is truly heard, and disagreements are resolved by finding a middle ground, not by winning and losing. Allah praises the believers as those whose “affairs are decided by mutual consultation among them” (Surah asy-Syura 42:38). Consulting your wife on major decisions such as moving, finances or the children's education is not a sign of weakness; rather, it strengthens the decision because it is carried by two. Listen to her views seriously, not as a mere formality before doing things your own way anyway. When your views differ, find a middle ground; final responsibility does rest with you, but a decision made together is more blessed and easier to carry out. See responsibilities of husband and wife.
