Q&A › Rights & responsibilities

🏡 Rights & responsibilities · #291

My wife earns more than I do. Does this affect my role as qawwam?

Being qawwam is not measured by who earns more, but by the responsibility, guidance and character you bring. Your wife's larger income is a blessing for the family, not a challenge to your dignity. Keep providing maintenance (nafkah) according to your means, and do not rely entirely on her wealth without her consent. Appreciate her contribution clearly, and avoid feelings of inferiority that turn into anger or control. Lead in other ways: calmness, decisions made through consultation, and spiritual leadership. A household where both support each other without keeping count of amounts is stronger. See rights of husband and wife.
