Can a Muslim take medication for depression, or does that show a lack of trust in Allah (tawakal)?
Taking medication recommended by a doctor for depression is permitted and does not contradict tawakal, just like seeking treatment for any other illness. Tawakal means making the effort through lawful means and then entrusting the outcome to Allah, not abandoning treatment. The decision on the type and duration of medication lies with the doctor, so follow their advice and do not stop on your own. Combine treatment with prayer, dua and family support. Do not let the views of ill-informed people keep you from recovering. If you have doubts about a treatment, discuss it with your doctor and consult knowledgeable people for peace of mind. Your health is a trust (amanah) that must be looked after. See mental health.
