Q&A › Raising children (tarbiyah)

🧒 Raising children (tarbiyah) · #89

How do I invite my seven-year-old to pray so that he loves it rather than fears it?

At this age the aim is to plant a love of prayer, so invite him with encouragement and example, not pressure. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Command your children to pray when they are seven years old” (Sunan Abu Dawud 495), and that command begins gently. Pray beside him so that he copies you, praise his effort even if it is not yet perfect, and make prayer time a calm moment, not a tense one. Explain the meaning of prayer in simple words: talking to Allah, who loves him. Avoid making prayer a punishment or an occasion for lecturing. A child who happily performs his small prayers today is more likely to keep praying as an adult. See prayer guide.
