Q&A › Family finances

💰 Family finances · #85

We always run out of money before we manage to save. How do we make sure saving comes first?

Pay yourselves first: set savings aside as soon as the salary comes in, rather than waiting for what is left at the end of the month, which is usually nothing. Set a fixed amount to be transferred straight into a savings account on payday, automatically if possible. Treat that saving like a bill that must be paid, not an option. Start with a small amount that doesn't hurt and raise it little by little. Spend what remains after saving, not the other way round. This way, savings grow without needing willpower every month.
