What are examples of permitted hints (ta'rid) when proposing to a widow in her ʿiddah?
Ta'rid is a general expression that hints at interest without stating a proposal clearly.
For example: "Many will be interested in a woman like you", "I hope Allah brings me a righteous wife", or "When the time comes, let me know." Clear expressions such as "I want to marry you after your ʿiddah" or asking for a promise are explicit (tasrih) and forbidden. Verse 2:235 permits hinting or keeping the wish in one's heart, but forbids secret promises and a contract before the ʿiddah ends. Such hinting is permitted only in the ʿiddah of death and of an irrevocable (ba'in) talaq, not a revocable (raj'i) talaq. Be mindful of the feelings of a woman newly bereaved and of her family. See widows.
