💍 Khitbah & engagement · #34
Can one propose or get engaged while in ihram for hajj or umrah?
No; the Prophet ﷺ forbade a person in ihram from marrying, giving in marriage and proposing.
Uthman bin Affan r.a. narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said: "A person in ihram may not marry, may not be given in marriage, and may not propose." In the Shafi'i school, a marriage contract during ihram is invalid, while proposing during ihram is judged disliked (makruh). This prohibition applies whether it is the man, the woman or the wali who is in ihram. After tahallul, everything becomes permissible again. So if you intend to make a proposal in the Holy Land, do it after leaving ihram. See khitbah.

Difference of madhhab. The Hanafi school permits a marriage contract during ihram, based on Ibn Abbas's narration about the Prophet's ﷺ marriage to Maimunah; the majority hold to the hadith of Uthman.
