Q&A › Family finances

💰 Family finances · #87

We both work. How do we divide household expenses fairly?

Start from the principle that the family's basic maintenance (nafkah) remains the husband's obligation; what the wife contributes is a choice counted as a kindness. Rather than splitting everything equally, draw up a family budget and decide together who covers what according to each person's means. Some couples set it so the husband covers basic needs while the wife's contribution goes to savings or shared goals. Protect the wife's right to her own money and property; her contribution is not an obligation that can be demanded. Review this arrangement when incomes change. Discuss it as a team, not as debtor and creditor. See family finances.
