What is the ruling on calling a spouse or co-wife by belittling nicknames?

Al-Hujurat 49:11 forbids it specifically: let not one people ridicule another, nor women ridicule other women; do not find fault with one another, and do not call each other by offensive nicknames — wretched is the name of wickedness after faith.
The verse mentions men and women separately, so no one is exempt. A nickname that is “just a joke” still falls under it if the one so called feels demeaned. Stop, and apologise just as plainly.
