🏡 Rights & responsibilities · #316

We are both shy and awkward about intimacy early in our marriage. How can we learn together?

Feeling shy and awkward at first is normal, and intimacy is something learned together with patience and love, not mastered at once. The Qur'an describes husband and wife: “They are a garment for you and you are a garment for them” (Surah al-Baqarah 2:187) — close, covering one another, with no need to pretend. Be gentle and do not rush; give each other room to learn what the other is comfortable with. Talk openly about what feels good, because communication eases awkwardness. Avoid comparing yourselves with unrealistic images in the media. If there is pain or a persistent problem, see a doctor. Time and trust will take the awkwardness away. See etiquette of intimacy.
