🤍 Character & conduct between spouses · #38
What does the hadith mean that many women are in Hell because of "ingratitude towards their husbands"?
It means being ungrateful — denying all of a husband's kindness because of one thing she dislikes — not kufr in the sense of leaving Islam.
In the narration of al-Bukhari, the Prophet ﷺ was asked whether they disbelieve in Allah; he replied that they are ungrateful to their husbands and to the kindness done to them: if you are good to one of them all the time and then she sees something she dislikes, she says "I have never seen any good from you" (Sahih al-Bukhari 29). The hadith is a reminder about character, not a tool to belittle women. The same principle applies to husbands: the Prophet ﷺ forbade a believing man to hate his wife for one trait, because he will surely like another (Sahih Muslim, Kitab ar-Radha'), and whoever does not thank people is not grateful to Allah. See Rights of husband & wife.
