May there be kompang, tambourines and nasyid at a wedding?
Yes; beating the tambourine (duff) to announce a marriage is mentioned in the hadith; what must be kept is wholesome song content, aurat and the limits of mixing.
The Prophet ﷺ said that what distinguishes the lawful (marriage) from the unlawful is the duff and the voice (Jamiʿ at-Tirmidhi 1088). Ar-Rubayyiʿ bint Muʿawwidh r.a. related that on the morning of her wedding, girls beat the duff and sang praises, and the Prophet ﷺ only corrected one line that claimed knowledge of the unseen (Sahih al-Bukhari 5147). The Malay kompang falls in the category of the duff. On other instruments scholars differ; the safe choice is kompang, tambourine and nasyid with good lyrics. Avoid songs with obscene lyrics, performances that expose the aurat, and noise that disturbs neighbours late at night. See The wedding feast.
