Q&A › Polygyny: rulings & justice

⚖️ Polygyny: rulings & justice · #82

My finances are not yet stable but my heart is drawn to someone. Should I practise polygyny?

Being drawn to someone is not enough when you cannot yet provide maintenance (nafkah) for two households justly. Polygyny brings lasting double financial responsibility, not just a passing feeling. Allah commands the one who provides maintenance to do so “according to his means” (Surah at-Talaq 65:7), so assessing your real means is a condition, not an option. Sort out financial stability and the needs of your existing family first before adding to the burden. Meanwhile, guard your gaze and your heart from becoming more attached. If these feelings are affecting your focus on your family, talk with a knowledgeable person and assess yourself honestly. See polygyny readiness tool.
