Q&A › Polygyny: rulings & justice

⚖️ Polygyny: rulings & justice · #104

I am willing to promise to be fair, but deep down I have doubts. Is that promise enough?

A promise on the tongue is not enough if your own heart already doubts your ability to keep it. Honest doubt is valuable information, not something to ignore to please yourself or others. Justice in polygyny is a daily, lifelong practice, not a one-time pledge. If you have doubts, assess their cause: finances, time, or the leanings of your heart. Fix what can be fixed first, and be honest if the answer is that you are not yet able. Allah commands us to uphold justice “even as against yourselves” (Surah an-Nisa' 4:135), and that includes honestly admitting one's own limits. It is safer to postpone than to shoulder a trust you yourself doubt. See conditions of polygyny.
