🏡 Rights & responsibilities · #177

My family is pressuring my husband to take another wife for certain reasons. How do we deal with this?

The decision whether or not to practise polygyny belongs to the two of you as a couple, not to the extended family. Outside pressure, even if well-meant in their eyes, should not override your own consent and the state of your own household. Husband and wife need to stand united and speak with one voice before the family, respectfully but firmly. Thank them for their concern, then explain that this is an internal matter you are handling together. Avoid open quarrels; simply state your boundaries politely. If the pressure becomes harmful, limit discussion of the subject. It is the two of you who carry the marriage, not those doing the pressuring. See in-laws.
