🌍 Children, inheritance & global · #144

Our father has died. Can our elderly mother be given a bigger share because she needs it most?

Mother's faraid share as a widow is already fixed, but the children can add to it willingly. As the deceased's wife, she receives one eighth if he had children. This proportion does not change because of her needs. But after each heir receives his or her share, anyone may give part or all of it to their mother. Make sure every agreement is made without pressure, including by siblings who are less well off, and is recorded in writing. Supporting a mother in need is also an ongoing duty of the children who are able, not a one-off gift. Allah says: “And, out of kindness, lower to them the wing of humility” (Surah al-Isra' 17:24). See maintenance of parents.
