My son-in-law did the most to look after me when I was ill. Can I leave part of my property to him by will?
Yes; a son-in-law is not an heir, so you can leave him up to one third of your estate by will without the heirs' consent. Honouring the service of those who care for us is noble character. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever does not thank people has not thanked Allah” (Sunan Abu Dawud 4811). But think about the feelings of your child who is his spouse, and of your other children. A gift to a son-in-law is sometimes seen as favouritism. State the reason in the will, and if possible tell your children while you are still alive. You can also give him a gift during your lifetime so he feels that appreciation now. See in-laws.
