Can parents take back a gift (hibah) they have given to a child?
In the Syafi'i school, parents are allowed to take back a gift (hibah) to their child, as long as the property is still in that child's possession. This exception is specific to parents; other givers generally cannot take back a completed hibah. Even though it is allowed, this step is rarely a good solution. It can hurt the child and spark envy between siblings. If the gift was given hastily or unfairly, try to put it right by giving to the other children as well. If you still want to take it back, do so in writing, explain the reason to your child gently, and get advice from the religious affairs office on how to do it. See fairness in gifts.
