🧒 Raising children (tarbiyah) · #45
May children be given gifts or rewards to encourage them to pray and read the Quran?
Yes, especially while they are young, as long as the reward is gradually replaced by understanding and a love of worship.
The Companions made toys for children being trained to fast so they could hold out until it was time to break the fast (Sahih al-Bukhari 1960), and the Prophet ﷺ advised: bring good news, do not drive people away (Sahih al-Bukhari 6125). Good examples: a star chart for the five daily prayers, a special outing on finishing the Iqraʿ books, or praise in front of the family. Avoid making money the condition for every prayer, as the child may only worship when paid. Alongside rewards, explain why we pray, let the child see their parents enjoying worship, and connect it with praying for things the child loves. See Educating the family.
