🧒 Raising children (tarbiyah) · #95

How do I make my child feel safe to admit mistakes to me?

A child will admit a mistake when he is sure he will be guided, not attacked or shamed. Your first reaction decides whether he will be honest next time. Take a breath and listen first before punishing; praise his courage in being open. Distinguish between a mistake and defiance: a mistake is taught, not harshly punished. Explain the consequences of what he did calmly and help him put it right, for example by apologising or replacing something. Avoid bringing up old wrongs every time he slips. A home where it is safe to admit mistakes raises children who are honest and brave enough to take responsibility. See educating the family.
