Q&A › Character & conduct between spouses

🤍 Character & conduct between spouses · #215

We live modestly and sometimes I feel inferior. How can my spouse and I nurture contentment?

Contentment makes modest provision feel spacious, while a sense of lack makes even plenty feel tight. Allah praises those who, when they spend, “are neither extravagant nor miserly, but hold a balance between the two” (Surah al-Furqan 25:67). Get into the habit of naming the blessings you have together: health, children, a roof over your heads, food on the table. Avoid comparing your marriage with other people's displays of luxury. Set reasonable financial goals and work towards them together, without going into debt to show off. A couple who are grateful together are happier than one that is rich but always feels short.
