Q&A › Preparation & choosing a spouse

🧭 Preparation & choosing a spouse · #54

I am marrying later in life (in my forties or older). What special preparation is needed?

Be grateful for the match that has come, and prepare in three areas: adjusting a lifestyle long lived alone, honest discussion about children and health, and financial and estate planning.
Allah granted offspring to the Prophet Zakariya in old age (Al ʿImran 3:38–40), and every match has its time. Things to discuss: hopes for children and the possibility of fertility treatment; responsibility for elderly parents; settled habits and routines; property, savings and a will, especially if there are children from a previous marriage; and where to live. A full health check is strongly encouraged. Do not rush because of age pressure; choose by the same criteria of faith and character. See Fertility and Managing an estate.
