How should a household budget be drawn up according to Islamic guidance?
The texts do not give a template, but they give an order of priority that can serve as a framework.
Start with your own dependants — the hadith says begin your charity with those you are responsible for. Second, keep to the middle course between waste and miserliness (al-Furqan 25:67; al-Isra' 17:29). Third, write down any debts for a fixed term (al-Baqarah 2:282). Fourth, spend according to your actual means, not your hoped-for means (at-Talaq 65:7). Fifth, decide together through consultation (ash-Shura 42:38). This site gives no percentages or figures — use your actual income and commitments. See Family finances and Checklists.
