🧭 Region & Middle East · #89

Our child is teased by schoolmates because their mother comes from a neighbouring country and speaks with a different accent. What should we do?

Teach your child that their mother's origins are something to be proud of, and inform the school so that the teasing is stopped. Your child may begin to feel ashamed of their own mother, and that hurts more than the teasing of friends. Listen to their story, then tell them about the goodness of their mother's family and stories of her hometown. Parents must be united; the father should never tease his wife's accent in front of the children, even as a joke. Meet the class teacher calmly and ask for the teasing to be dealt with. Allah says: “let not a group of people ridicule other people” (Surah al-Hujurat 49:11). Explain its meaning to your child so that they know they are in the right. See communication and emotions.
