Q&A › Region & Middle East

🧭 Region & Middle East · #88

Our teenager is of Malaysian and Indonesian descent and is confused about their identity. How can we help?

Help them see that they are not half of each, but a full heir to two heritages. Teenagers are indeed searching for an answer to the question ‘who am I?’, and children of mixed families feel it more strongly. Tell them the family stories of both sides, take them to visit both hometowns, and let them enjoy the languages, food and customs of both. Do not compete as mother and father over which country is better. Emphasise the identity that unites everything: they are a Muslim, a beloved child, and a member of two extended families. If they are teased about their origins, listen first before acting. See educating the family.
