🤍 Character & conduct between spouses · #12
What is the proper manner of speaking to parents and parents-in-law during a disagreement?
Al-Isra’ 17:23–24 sets a very close boundary: do not say to them a word of contempt, do not rebuke them, and speak to them a noble word — and lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy.
Priority is also stated in the hadith: a man asked who most deserves good companionship; the Prophet ﷺ answered “your mother” three times, then “your father”. This courtesy remains even when their views about your household are not accepted. Disagreement may be voiced; a contemptuous tone may not. See In-laws.
