Q&A › Akad nikah

📜 Akad nikah · #28

Is it obligatory to accept an invitation to a wedding feast?

Attending a wedding feast (walimatul urus) is obligatory according to the Shafi'i school, if the invitation is addressed to you personally and you have no valid excuse.
The Prophet ﷺ said: "When one of you is invited to a walimah, let him attend it." The obligation lapses if there is a valid religious excuse, such as illness, long distance, or wrongdoing at the event that one cannot prevent. A general invitation (for example an open social media announcement) does not carry the same obligation. If you are observing a voluntary fast, attend and pray for the host. See Walimah.
