What is mahr mithil?
Mahr mithil is the equivalent mahr customarily received by women of her standing in her father's family, such as her sisters or paternal aunts.
It is required when no mahr was stated in the contract, when the stated mahr is invalid (for example, something forbidden), or in the case of a marriage annulled after consummation. A Companion once ruled a mahr equal to that of other women for a woman whose husband died before fixing the mahr, and the Prophet ﷺ confirmed that ruling. Setting it takes into account age, beauty, education and status. See Mahr.
